Puddle

By: M.N.

The night rains had just ceased, leaving the air fresh and tignly to even the dullest

of senses.  A dip in the black street held a simple puddle of midnight rain, reflecting the

night sky, it's stars full of twinkle.  A dark cloud passed overhead occasionally, but that was

all that mired it's reflection.  No vibrations of city busses vibrated it's surface, no city

sounds at all.  The wind was still, all was silent, all was asleep.

Well, almost all.  Booted steps clicked across the paved street.  Even in their rhythm

and light in their step.  The boots traveled up to her knees, hugging her legs that were

wrapped tightly in soft leather.  A black spandex shirt hugged her torso.  Tank-top in style,

tight in it's fit.  A leather jacket covered her bare limbs.  Silver chokers and chains adorned

her neck, matching the thick rings on each of her fingers.  Her raven hair fell around her

shoulder blades in soft layers which she carelessly ran her fingers through, shaking the

dampness from its locks as she walked.  Blue eyes, lined in kohl pencil and thick black lashes,

rested upon the street as she walked.  Lips lined in black and colored in the bloodiest red

rested in a frown as her thoughts, unknown to anyone, circled through her mind.

The puddle stirred as the footsteps clicked against the pavement it was nestled in.

The stars seeming to shake in it's reflection, the blessed silence of the night broken.  The

footsteps stopped before the puddle.  The soft sound of leather was the next sound as she

crouched to look into the puddle, seeing the night stars reflected at her.  She did not

notice the reflection of her face a moment, the simplicity of the beautiful stars reflected

in a pool of rain water made her frown lift and a soft smile cureve her colored lips.  The

puddle reflected her face back at her, shouting to call attention to her reflection.  Her blue

eyes looked deeper and she saw her smile.  A tiny part of her dark thoughts brightened in

wonder and curiosity at seeing it.

She ran her fingertips over the surface of the pool.  Watching her reflection

distort made a silent chuckle tickle at her throat.  Though silent, the puddle seemed to hear

it and stilled, showing her smile onc emore.  She straightened from her crouch and made

effort to step around the pool, not wishing to destroy it's surface.  The smile remained soft

on her lips as she continued on, her footsteps once more echoing in the broken silence.

Long after she was gone, no other footsteops or sounds had been made in the night.

The puddle remained calm.  But more than it's simple calmn, it continued to reflect the smile.

Morning clouds drifted over the sky as the sun began to rise, making it almost seem murky

after the nights rain.  The sun rose high in the sky and still the puddle reflected the night

stars and the simple wondrous smile.  The clouds broke, shining the sun down upon the calm

puddle.  It's drops slowly drying up and returning to the sky.  Even then, they reflected the smile.

She slept, a creature of night, not seeing the sun.  But as she did so, the smile

remained on her face as she dreamed of puddles and gentle rain drops.   Dreaming of

creation and the end.  The end was not always so bad.  Perhaps not to be sought, but forever

reminded to smile upon those dreary days.  The puddle knew this, as it knew her from her

simple smile.  And it waited, to be reborn again.  Perhaps as a puddle, or a smiling child.

The end was always room for beginning.
